From Age-ing to Sage-ing Project Update – November 2014

Posted on November 3 2014

Seniors are valuable neighbourhood resources! The Seniors Association of Greater Edmonton (Sage) is working with older adults 55+ living in Beverly and Abbotsfield to develop intergenerational projects in their neighbourhood. Sage chose this diverse area because there are a high number of seniors in this part of Edmonton who do not enjoy as many activities and services as other parts of the city. There are also many children living in poverty. In the Age-ing to Sage-ing (A2S) project, seniors explore their gifts and how they would like to offer them. New neighbourhood connections are made and supported.

The project team hosted seniors’ conversation cafes at seniors’ apartment buildings and at the Abbotsfield Library Branch. Project ideas were discussed in church basements, coffee shops, at community events and at area interagency and interfaith meetings. One on one conversations also took place.

Here is what older adults shared in our conversations:

  • Interest in doing activities together - one on one connection is important – ie gardening; group fitness classes, cooking, reading together
  • Grandparents that are raising their grandchildren would like to form a support group
  • Some would like to teach others how to knit and to can food
  • Some seniors are willing to canvas neighbours and do surveys to help build community
  • Some would like a coffee time and place to get together and socialize
  • Some are lonely

SAGE is working with the new Parent Link Centre at RJ Scott School, the Candora Society and the Abbotsfield Recreation Centre. They will provide staff expertise and space for the development of these project ideas. Sage is also pleased to work with the Beacon Heights Community League.

Please contact the project coordinator if you have any questions or comments or would like to get involved.

Shelley Sabo, From Age-ing to Sage-ing Project Coordinator

Sage obtained a grant from the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program for this project which runs until March 31, 2015.
