ALBERTA HEALTH SERVICES TESTING CRITERIA
Information regarding testing criteria is rapidly changing. For the most up-to-date information please visit alberta.ca/COVID19 for the most up‑to‑date information on COVID‑19 and details on the measures in place to help prevent the spread and support Albertans.
What Should I Do If I Think I Have COVID-19?
If you have symptoms including fever, cough, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, sore throat or runny nose, you MUST self-isolate for 10 days after the onset of symptoms and until your symptoms have resolved (whichever is longer).
Complete the COVID-19 Self-Assessment to determine if you should receive testing for COVID-19
If you are quarantined because you recently came back from outside the country, or you are a close contact of a confirmed case of COVID, you must remain on your own property. Under no circumstance should you leave your property during the 14 days of self-isolation.
Please do not visit a hospital, physician’s office, lab or healthcare facility without consulting Health Link 811 first.
If your symptoms worsen, call 811. They are experiencing heavy call volumes and will get to your call as quickly as they can.
Call 911 if you are seriously ill and need immediate medical attention. Inform them that you may have COVID-19.
If you are in mandatory self-isolation:
Do not go outside for a walk through your neighbourhood or park. This includes children in mandatory self-isolation.
You can get fresh air in your backyard, if you have one, but you must remain on private property not accessible by others.
If you live in an apartment building or highrise, you must stay inside and cannot use the elevators or stairwells to go outside. If your balcony is private and at least two metres away from your closest neighbour's, you may go outside on the balcony.
This directive is consistent with the new federal requirements under the Quarantine Act.
To determine if you need to be tested and next steps, complete the COVID-19 self-assessment for Albertans or the COVID-10 self-assessment for healthcare and shelter workers, enforcement personnel and first responders.
ALBERTA TO EXPAND TESTING CRITERIA

Medical gloves are a very important component of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for healthcare workers. However, gloves do not need to be worn by members of the general public during their daily activities, such as when grocery shopping. Gloves can create a false sense of security. If not used and disposed of properly, wearing gloves may provide another surface for the virus to live on – potentially encouraging virus transmission.
Gloves are not a substitute for proper hand hygiene and we encourage frequent and thorough hand washing (with soap and water for 20 seconds), and covering your mouth when coughing or sneezing. Avoid touching your face, nose or mouth regardless of whether gloves are being worn. These remain the best evidence-based ways to prevent the spread of respiratory illness.
For those who choose to wear gloves, proper glove use must be practiced:
Hands should always be washed and/or sanitized prior to putting on gloves and after taking gloves off.
Gloves should be changed when they become soiled or torn.
Change gloves if you touch your face – eyes, nose or mouth – or cover a cough or sneeze with your hands while wearing gloves.
Disposable gloves should be thrown out and not used again once they have been taken off.
Reusable gloves must be cleaned and disinfected after each use.
Edmonton Transit Service (ETS) customers are encouraged to travel only if it’s essential, and when possible, travel during off-peak hours. Enhanced Saturday service is provided during the weekdays and regular Saturday service on the weekends. This allows more time for buses and LRT trains to be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected when they are out of service.
There are NO fares for transit at the time including bus, LRT or DATS. There will not be any refunds or prorated reimbursements for March transit passes, but if you have already purchased an April transit pass you can apply for a refund by calling 311. Able-bodied passengers are requested to board through the bus back doors. Those requiring use of the ramp or bus kneeling feature are welcome to continue using the front doors.
DATS service is still available for registered clients. There are fewer clients per vehicle to provide safe physical distancing.

The resources cover a wide range of topics and the intent is to inform people about their options and available support, and provide them with tools to continue isolating, social distance, remain in quarantine, or access health care support.

The implications of COVID-19 for people with intellectual disabilities and their families are significant. CACL will be sharing disability-related resources related to the COVID-19 pandemic on their new resource page. The page includes mental health resources, accessibility information as it relates to COVID-19, and emergency preparedness information for individuals with disabilities.
MENTAL HEALTH RESOURCES
Albertans can call the Mental Health Help Line at 1‑877‑303‑2642 or the Addiction Help Line at 1‑866‑332‑2322, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for confidential support, information and referrals.
It is important to remember during this time of uncertainty to stay connected with your loved ones. Please phone your family, friends and neighbours who are isolating.
WellCan offers free resources to help Canadians develop coping strategies and build resilience to help deal with uncertainty, mental health, and substance abuse concerns during the COVID-19 pandemic. Resources include toolkits to adapt to remote work, tips on effective physical distancing, using technology to combat loneliness in isolation/quarantine and articles about managing feelings of sadness, anxiety, and stress.
As more organizations offer virtual programming and virtual meetings, we know there is a need to learn how to use the software. One of the most common video conferencing platforms is a program called “Zoom.”

VIRTUAL VISION MATE PROGRAM
For Canadians who are blind or partially sighted, physical distancing can present a unique set of challenges that can contribute to feelings of isolation that many already experience on a daily basis. During this unprecedented time, one of the easiest things we can do is reach out to each other to engage in friendly conversation and offer support.
The CNIB Foundation has adapted one of its core program offerings, the Vision Mate program, to engage volunteers to connect virtually with participants by phone or online at least once a week.

As a means of entertaining lonely adults during the novel coronavirus outbreaks, a team of Canadian high schoolers created a hotline that plays pre-recorded messages of positivity. The Joy4All project was launched by students from the Ever Active Schools recreational leadership program run by the Calgary Board of Education.
The students say they created the free hotline as a means of comforting quarantined seniors across North America. However, people of all ages are encouraged to dial 1-877-JOY-4ALL in order to enjoy the regularly updated selection of jokes, stories, guided mediations, and educational messages.
SHAKESPEARE AT HOME
Experience the magic of Shakespeare from the comfort of your very own home! The Globe Theatre is showcasing a number of their produced plays free of charge and available on YouTube. You’ll be able see some of Shakespeare’s most famous stage plays such as: Hamlet (2018), Romeo and Juliet (2009), A Midsummer Night’s Dream (2013) and The Two Noble Kinsmen (2018), plus two previously unreleased titles The Winter’s Tale (2018) and The Merry Wives of Windsor (2019), will all be available for free, one on rotation every two weeks.
