Posted on November 1 2015

The Planning Committee of the Family Violence Prevention Month Launch is pleased to invite you to City Hall on November 2, 2015 as the City of Edmonton proclaims Family Violence Prevention Month. The theme of this year's event is “Supporting the Supporters: How Friends and Family Can Help Prevent Family Violence”.

Date: Monday, November 2, 2015
Time: Noon to 1:00 PM
Location: City Room, City Hall

Mayor Don Iveson will proclaim the month of November as Family Violence Prevention Month.  The Honourable Irfan Sabir, Minister of Human Services will bring greetings from the Government of Alberta.  The program will also include greetings from other dignitaries and a presentation by Lana Wells.

Lana Wells holds the Brenda Strafford Chair in the Prevention of Domestic Violence in the Faculty of Social Work, University of Calgary and is leading Shift: The Project to End Domestic Violence. Shift's goal is to significantly reduce and prevent domestic violence in Alberta. Shift has written an issues brief exploring the value of informal networks, and how best to support those networks to effectively respond to the needs of individuals impacted by domestic violence.  While formal services and supports are critical, research shows that informal networks – including friends and family – play a pivotal role in preventing domestic violence.

You are invited to join citizens of Edmonton at this event, and stay after for refreshments and agency displays.
