What is the Seniors’ Housing Forum?

The Seniors’ Housing Forum Planning Committee comprised of key community stakeholders, is presenting this one-day Seniors' Housing Forum for seniors, their families and caregivers, free of charge! The goal of the Forum is to educate participants about the range of housing options and community resources available for older adults and to guide individuals in planning appropriate future housing for themselves and/or significant others. This is the eleventh time the Seniors’ Housing Forum has been held, with participant attendance in past years ranging between 650-850 and 45+ exhibitors in attendance.

Session Topics

A: Home & Independent Living: Health and Home

Time: 10:00 am – 11:15 am

Location: Large Auditorium

This session will focus on seniors’ housing options for home living in apartments, condos and houses, and will also discuss home living supports, such as day programming and personal care services.

 

B: Financial Literacy and Housing

Time: 10:00 am – 11:15 am

Location: Atrium

This session provides information on strategies for planning finances to support housing choices. Guidance will also be offered on accessing income supports and other financial benefits.

 

C: Alternative Housing Options

Time: 10:00 am – 11:15 am

Location: Small Auditorium

This session will include a panel that explores a variety of innovative housing models for seniors. The benefits and challenges of these exciting initiatives are considered.

 

D: Supportive & Facility Living: Health and Home

Time: 11:30 am – 12:30 pm

Location: Large Auditorium

This session will provide an overview on supportive living, facility living and designated supportive living options to help address the questions and concerns seniors face when choosing the optimal environment in which to live beyond independent living, as well as health supports available to complement these environments.

 

E: Landlord & Tenant and Condo Rights

Time: 11:30 am – 12:30 pm

Location: Atrium

Knowledge of your rights and obligations as a landlord, tenant and condo owner can greatly impact your enjoyment of your home and your financial security. This session provides an overview of key issues and legislation.

 

F: Technology and Housing

Time: 11:30 am – 12:30 pm

Location: Small Auditorium

This session explores new initiatives and trends in technology as it relates to aging in place, including devices that promote aging well and maintaining independence.

 

G: Community Resources

Time: 1:30 pm – 2:30 pm

Location: Large Auditorium

This session will give an overview of some practical resources that allow seniors to age in place and receive support in the community. It will describe city-wide services offered by senior-serving organizations that provide resources designed to help seniors live safely and independently.

 

H: Aging in Place and Home Modifications

Time: 1:30 pm – 2:30 pm

Location: Atrium

This session will provide an overview of available supports in order to plan or modify homes for independent living, as well as available financial supports that assist with adapting homes to meet the emerging needs of older adults.

 

I: Caregiver Support and Family Dynamics

Time: 1:30 pm – 2:30 pm

Location: Small Auditorium

This session outlines supports available to families and caregivers as seniors transition from one housing environment to another. Strategies for handling family dynamics, positive transitions, caring for the caregiver and stress related to moving will be discussed.
